Freya at the Pet Shop

Freya, a six-year old girl chooses a red ball and a soft toy rabbit for her puppy in the pet shop while her mum studies the puppy food.

It is Saturday. No school today.

“Mummy, can we take Poppy for a walk to the park?” Freya asks. She is looking out of the window. The sun is shining.

“Yes,” says Mummy. “Now she’s had all her injections, we can take her out. But we’ll need to get her a lead and a harness first. And some more puppy food.”

Freya’s eyes brighten.
“Oh, I love the pet shop! Can we get everything there? And can we get some more toys? Last time I was in such a hurry to get home to Poppy. I only chose a couple. I’m sure there’ll be lots more she’ll love.”

After breakfast, they set off.
The pet shop is full of interesting smells and colourful things. The scent of fresh hay and pet food fills the air.

While Mummy looks at the puppy food, Freya goes to the toys. She chooses a bright red ball, perfect for playing in the park. Then she chooses a soft toy rabbit for Poppy to take to bed.

When they go to pay, the shopkeeper leans over the counter with a big smile.

“I think your puppy will enjoy the ball and the rabbit you’ve chosen,” she says.

Freya nods.
“Yes, she loves the toys I got her last time. I’m sure she’ll love these too. And I bet we’ll come back often. There are so many lovely things here.”

Freya holds the shopping bag tightly as they walk home. Her steps get quicker and quicker. She can already picture Poppy’s tail wagging and her ears flopping with excitement.

When they reach the house, Poppy whines happily. Her tail twirls round and round like a little whirlwind.

“Look what I’ve brought for you!” Freya says. “We can go to the park now and play.”

She holds out the bright red ball.
Poppy pounces on it with a playful bark, making Freya laugh.

“I thought you’d like it,” she says, watching Poppy prance proudly around the room with her new treasure.
