A Picnic at the Park

Freya, a six-year old girl and her puppy meet up with Freya's friend Annie and her dog Milo at the park

It is a lovely day.
Mummy looks out of the window and smiles.

“It’s such a nice day. Shall I call Annie’s mummy and see if they’d like to meet us for a picnic at the park?” she asks.

Annie and her mummy are delighted.
Freya can’t wait to show them Poppy, her new puppy.

Freya and Mummy pack a picnic basket with sandwiches, fruit, and drinks.
Soon they are on their way.

The scent of freshly cut grass fills the air as they arrive.
Flowers are blooming.
Birds are singing.
The sun is warm, and the whole park feels perfect for a picnic.

Freya spots Annie and her mummy sitting on a blanket under a big, shady tree.

“Hi, Annie!” Freya calls, waving.
Poppy bounces beside her, still learning how to walk on a lead.

“Hi, Freya! Hi, Poppy!” Annie and her mummy call back.

When Freya reaches Annie and Milo, Poppy crouches into a playful bow.
She darts around Milo in excited circles.
Freya laughs and runs after them.

She is nervous about letting Poppy off the lead.
Poppy hasn’t learned to come back when called.
But once she is free, Poppy and Milo race around the big tree together until they flop down, tired and happy.

With the dogs resting, the mums unpack the picnic.
The girls run to the playground.
They take turns on the slide and the swing.
They giggle together on the seesaw, glad that the dogs have become friends.

After a while, they return to the picnic blanket.
The mums have laid out the picnic.
The girls sit down and enjoy their snacks, chatting about their dogs.

“Do you think Milo and Poppy will be best friends?” Annie asks, taking a bite of her sandwich.

“I hope so,” Freya says, choosing a piece of fruit.
“They already seem to like each other. And Milo is such a friendly dog.”

By the time the picnic is finished, the dogs are full of energy again.
The girls decide to play with them, taking turns throwing Poppy’s new ball.
Poppy and Milo chase it, then chase each other, tails wagging wildly.

The afternoon drifts by in a blur of laughter, sunshine, and shared moments.
The mums chat and sip their tea, watching their daughters and the playful dogs.

As the sun begins to set, the park glows with warm, golden light.
Freya and Annie gather their things slowly.

“We’ll have to do this again soon,” Annie says, taking Poppy’s ball from Milo and handing it back to Freya.

“Definitely,” Freya agrees, putting Poppy back on the lead.
“Today was so much fun.”

They say their goodbyes and head home, happy that Poppy and Milo have found a new friend in each other — just like Freya and Annie have.
