Dexter: The Accidental Superhero

Sometimes, the greatest heroes don’t even know they’ve saved the day…

A brown‑and‑black dog sits calmly on a garden lawn, facing forward as if posing for a portrait. Behind him are colourful flowers, a wooden fence, and a rustic garden shed, creating a peaceful setting.

Inside the garden summerhouse, Ollie was completely absorbed in his latest project. He carefully snapped the final bricks onto his Lego caravan just as a low whine broke his concentration.

It was Dexter.

The scruffy terrier cross had woken from his snooze, and now his tail was wagging furiously while his whining grew louder and more urgent by the second.

“Alright, alright, I’m coming,” Ollie laughed, reluctantly setting his Lego aside.

The moment the door opened, Dexter shot out like a rocket, his floppy ears flying behind him. Ollie raced after him to see what all the excitement was about.

A young boy and his dog race across a lawn towards something exciting with a flowerbed and a summerhouse in the background.

Dexter’s excitement, it turned out, was the best kind of surprise possible.

Grandad and Granny had arrived.

Maisy had already welcomed them at the front door, but Dexter clearly didn’t want to miss any of the excitement.

Grandparents arrive in their estate car and are welcomed with open arms by their granddaughter.

In the kitchen, the island counter was quickly covered with boxes, tissue paper, and little surprises.

Grandad and Granny had brought presents for everyone.

There was a glittering princess tiara for Maisy.

A bright blue superhero cape for Ollie.

And for Dexter…

A blue squeaky bone.

Just as Granny reached the final box, the kitchen door flew open and Ollie and Dexter burst into the room like a whirlwind of pure energy.

“Ah, there you are!” Grandad laughed.

A young boy and his dog burst into the kitchen where grandparents have just arrived and are unpacking presents for the grandchildren

“Look what we’ve got for you,” Grandad said as he fastened the superhero cape carefully around Ollie’s shoulders.

Beside him, Dexter proudly held his new squeaky bone in his mouth, his tail thumping happily against the kitchen cupboards.

Grandad puts a superhero cape on his grandson Ollie while the rest of the family watch.

Ollie couldn’t wait to try out his superhero cape.

But once they were outside in the garden, he suddenly had an even better idea.

Kneeling down in the grass, Ollie carefully tied the cape around Dexter’s neck instead.

“There,” Ollie grinned. “Now you’re a real superhero, Dexter.”

Dexter sat perfectly still and proud, gripping his squeaky bone tightly between his teeth.

Maisy stood beside them in her tiara, forgetting for a moment that she was supposed to be a princess, completely absorbed in what Ollie was doing.

Ollie, a young boy, puts his superhero cape onto Dexter, his dog. Dexter is sitting perfectly still holding his squeaky toy bone between his teeth. Ollie's little sister Maisy is watching.

What Ollie didn’t know was that the garden really was about to need a superhero.

Beneath the old oak tree, a tiny fledgling bird was fluttering helplessly in the grass, still learning how to use its wings.

And beneath the nearby bushes, the neighbours’ cat was creeping ever closer.

Its eyes were fixed on the little bird.

A fledgling bird is sitting helplessly underneath an old oak tree while a cat, beneath some bushes, is silently creeping towards it.

Dexter noticed the cat immediately.

With his blue cape fluttering behind him, he charged across the lawn.

The startled cat took one look at the flying blue blur and scrambled up the nearby tree.

Dexter, the terrier cross, with his superhero cape round his shoulders, charges at a cat that is stalking a fledgling bird and the cat scrambles up a nearby tree

Ollie smiled as Dexter trotted back towards the children, quite unaware that he had just become… an accidental superhero.

After chasing a cat away from a fledgling bird, Dexter, with his superhero cape round his shoulders, calmly walks back to the children.

He might have only been chasing a cat…

But to the tiny bird beneath the oak tree, Dexter truly was a superhero.
